This is a description about the Mens Breakfast, a bi-monthly gathering of Men at Jubilee.
‘Vision is a picture of the future that creates passion in people’
So what are culture and values? Every individual and every church together has conscious or subconscious values, principles, standards, the way we behave, attitudes, the way we do things, what we believe church should feel like. Often these are deeply held things that guide and direct what we do. And these behaviours and principles are what we call ‘values’. Someone phrased it like this:
And these values, how we behave together make up what we call the culture of the church. Sam Chand puts it like this:
‘It is the atmosphere in which the church functions. It is the prevalent attitude. It is the collage of spoken and unspoken messages.’
In short, before anybody knows what we have done or what we are doing, values and culture are the impressions people bump into as they encounter the church on a Sunday, at a prayer meeting, on tweets and posts, in the workplace or at the school gate.
WE REJOICE...because God is our Strength and Song
At the heart of Christianity is joy, enjoyment, rejoicing, celebration, thankfulness, praise. Thats what our very God given name Jubilee means. There’s also a big clue in the word Gospel. Joy news. Christians are meant to be joyful. When God the Holy Spirit invades our very being the Apostle Paul tells us that amongst other things, joy fruits in our lives.
As the Apostle Paul put it
We “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice” (Phil. 4:4).
WE WELCOME...because God is Love
This is who he is. At his very core God loves. He’s been loving throughout eternity past. Before anything was created, our triune God, perfect oneness, yet three glorious persons, has dwelt in loving community as a kind of eternal dance of joyful love between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
In one of the greatest stories that Jesus told about that very love that crosses barriers, The Parable of the good Samaritan, where God puts a Jew in the road, beaten and dying, and a Samaritan on horse back rescuing and caring (A Jew and Jew would have been good, but a jew and samaritan would have been impossible). Through this story, Jesus says to all of us - Go and do likewise. Love God, love each, no matter what.
1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God…..19 We love because he first loved us.
And so as those who have been transformed by His love, a love beyond reason, we love and welcome others EVERYONE into that fellowship of life and love too
WE INSPIRE...because God is our Father
This is the intimacy and security and inheritance from which all our doing is based. We are inspired and inspire others, we are encouraged and encourage other, we are lifted and lift others to the great call of God together from this foundation and this foundation only.
1 John 3:1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God
WE GO...because God is Light
4 In him [Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
We are on the winning side. Jesus already has the victory. So…we go.
He says “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
We go cause God rules and reigns…He’s Invincible like Light
