Sunday Celebration

Sunday 2nd August 2020

Jubilee Church Teesside | Sun, 2nd Aug 2020

Good Morning!

You can join in our Sunday Celebration from here, on Facebook Live from 10:30am or from our YouTube Channel.

Thanks so much for joining us. All of our weekly celebration is now in one video.

Time to Pray

We would love to give you an opportunity to respond to what was shared this morning. If you are watching this with your children, encourage them to get involved with the prayer response too.

  • Thank God for the transformation in your life, in the Same way that Rahab’s life was transformed, yours has been too.
  • Ask God to give you a sense of boldness in your faith in the same way that Rahab had.
  • Pray for opportunities to be welcoming to others around you and demonstrate God’s love.
  • Pray for us as a church, that we would have the same sense of obedience to God’s call that Joshua showed.

For Children

Story

Watch this time travel story about Joshua, Rahab and the spies, and the walls of Jericho falling down from Superbook.

What can we learn about faith from Rahab?

Rahab recognised that the Israelite's God was powerful, as she had heard of the great deeds God had done.  She heard of how the Lord dried up the Red Sea so the Israelites could cross to safety. She heard of how the Israelites were victorious over King Sihon and King Og.  She recognised that the Israelite's Lord is the God of heaven and earth.  In faith, she hid the Israelite spies, and protected them from the King of Jericho, in spite of danger.  She then "cast herself upon boldly... upon the mercy of the spies" (quote from The Message of Hebrews, The Bible Speaks Today by Raymond Brown) to protect her and her family from death.

As a result, she and her household were saved.  She was remembered for her faith in Hebrews 11:31.

And she became part of the family line of Jesus! She married Salmon of the tribe of Judah, and was the mother of Boaz (who married Ruth).  She was the great great grandmother of King David!. (Matthew 1:5)

Craft / Memory Verse - Scarlett Chord

Hebrews 11:31 - ‘By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.’

Rahab tied a scarlet cord out of her window, as the spies instructed, so that she would be saved when the Israelites took the city.

Try making some twisted cord.  You need: wool (ideally bright red), scissors and a mug. For the memory verse, you will need some card, a hole punch and a pen.

Watch the video to learn how!

Write the memory verse below on a small piece of card (perhaps from a cereal box!), punch a hole with a hole punch, and tie the twisted cord to the card!

Experiment

Rahab demonstrated her faith by action!

Make some cornflour gloop!  It is called a Non-Newtonian liquid.  That means, it has the properties of liquid and solid.  When it has a force upon it, it acts as a solid, and when the pressure is released, it acts as a liquid.  Try making some!

Watch this video to see how!

All you need is: a box of cornflour, water, a mixing bowl, and a tray. It is messy, so may be better to do outside, with adult supervision.  When you are finished, dispose of it in the bin (not the drains - to avoid drainage problems)!

Now imagine a swimming pool filled with cornflour gloop!  It is possible to walk across the surface, and the cornflour gloop acts as a solid.  As soon as there is no movement/pressure on the gloop, the gloop acts as a liquid, and is like quick sand!  It is a bit like faith, we need to act in faith, or our faith is not effective!  Faith needs action!

James 2:25-26

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

See this link to watch people walking on a swimming pool filled with cornflour gloop!

Song - Watato Children's Choir - Webele (Thank you)

Rahab had a great deal to be thankful to God for! She was saved from the destruction of Jericho. She is remembered for her faith.  And she became part of the family line of Jesus. Let us be thankful to God for His mercy to us.  Enjoy this song!

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you for this story about Rahab's faith.  Help us to remember that you are all powerful.  Help us to be full of faith, and act in faith.  Lord, please help us to be thankful for who you are, and for everything you have done.

Amen.
