Today's Talk

Watch today's talk from Raj.

Time to Pray

We would love to give you an opportunity to respond to what was shared this morning. If you are watching this with your children, encourage them to get involved with the prayer response too.

  • Rejoice and celebrate in the grace of God.
  • Ask God to 'train and tame' you as His 'war horse' for His kingdom.
  • How could you show gentleness in your life this week? - Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to do this and for opportunities to display it.
  • Pray that across His Church in Teesside God would raise a gentle and meek people that would serve others and point the world to Jesus.

Want to know more about want it means to become a Christian?

For Children

Drama

Watch this video to help you understand Proverbs 15:1 - 'A gentle answer will calm a person's anger, but an unkind answer will cause more anger'.

  • Can you think of times when you have been like the guy in the first half of this video?
  • Can you think of times when you have been like the guy in the second half of this video?
  • When we have an attitude that considers the other person, and we are sensitive to their feelings, it helps anger to melt away.

What does it mean to be gentle/meek/have humility?

These words mean:

Being sensitive to others feelings, and accepting it when they are insensitive to ours. (Exploring Paul's letters, Galatians to Philemon by Phil Crowther p24)

Gentleness is the opposite of "selfish ambition". Gentle people are not "conceited, provoking and envying each other (verse 26).  Gentleness is an expression of humility, considering the needs and hurts of others before one's personal goals. (Galatians, by G Walter Hansen p179)

Being even tempered, tranquil, balanced in spirit, unpretentious, and that has the passions under control. The word is best translated "meekness", not as an indicator of weakness, but of power and strength under control.  The person who possesses this quality, pardons injuries, corrects faults, and rules his own spirit well.  (New King James Version, Spirit Filled Life Bible, Word Wealth for James 6:11 praotes #Strongs 4236 p1847)

Memory Verse

Proverbs 15:1 'A gentle answer will calm a person's anger, but an unkind answer will cause more anger'. This song might help you to learn it!

Story

The North Wind and the Sun - An Aesop's Fable. The North Wind tries to get the man to take off his coat by harsh treatment.  The Sun wins through kind and gentle persuasion.

Illustration

Watch this video on how to poke a balloon without popping it. It illustrates how a gentle person is not easily hurt when others offend them.

Experiment

The chocolate melts from solid to liquid over the heat.  Shape the molten chocolate into a heart.  It is a picture of how God shapes a gentle attitude in our hearts.
(Requires adult supervision as there is boiling water and hot chocolate involved).

Melt the chocolate over the hot water (as per video below).  When melted, spoon a moderate quantity onto greaseproof paper and shape into a heart.  Enjoy!

Prayer

Lord, please help me to be more considerate of other people's feelings.  Help me to be even tempered, gentle and kind, not speaking harshly. Just as the chocolate was softened and moulded, please would you soften my heart and mould it to be more gentle. Amen.
